How to Adjust to Your New CPAP Machine and Nasal Mask

Getting used to a new CPAP machine and nasal mask may take a little time, but it’s well worth the effort that you’ll make during the initial adjustment period.

If you’re new to CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy, and you need a few tips on getting comfortable with your new equipment, you’ll enjoy this quick guide to adjusting to your new CPAP machine and nasal mask.

By following our expert tips, you’ll be one step closer to conquering even the worst symptoms of sleep apnea, and you’ll enjoy better sleep that leads to improved quality of life.

Without CPAP therapy, obstructive sleep apnea, which is a sleep disorder characterized by stop-starts in breathing during the night and loud, intermittent snoring, may have a very detrimental effect on your health.

Typical side effects of obstructive sleep apnea include fatigue, mood swings, mental fog, heart problems, high blood pressure, headaches (especially in the morning) and depression.

As you can see, this sleep disorder, which may only be alleviated by the best CPAP therapy, is a serious health issue that really needs the correct treatment.

How to Get Used to Your New CPAP Equipment

There are some tips and tricks that you may use to ensure a smooth adjustment period as you embark on CPAP therapy.

Choose the Right CPAP Mask – Buying the proper size of CPAP nasal mask should be priority one. If you’re not happy with your current mask or nasal pillow and its fit, it may be time to trade it in for a model that is sized properly for your face.

Since we all have different facial contours and proportions, choosing CPAP nasal masks and CPAP nasal pillows that fit well is worth a little time and effort. Before ordering a mask from a sleep apnea treatment specialist, be certain to read all information on sizing.

Take the time to do a few measurements to guarantee an ideal fit – you’ll be glad that you did once your new CPAP accessory arrives.

Adjust Your Mask for Ideal Fit – Ordering the right size of CPAP mask is just the beginning, in terms of what you may do to ensure a more comfortable fit during the night-time hours. Most masks may be adjusted in a variety of ways, in order to guarantee no chafing, irritation, or gaps.

Speak to your CPAP mask vendor (if you order online, which is very convenient, send them an email or call them up) to find out exactly how you may adjust your mask for premium comfort and the best sleep apnea treatment.

Use Your CPAP Machine’s Humidifier – Some people who use CPAP machines and CPAP masks find the air a little dry at times, and this may lead to nasal dryness and irritation.

By choosing a CPAP machine with a humidifier (your unit may already have this feature), you’ll be able to enjoy moist, warm air that is customized to your preferred temperature.

Wear Your Mask During the Day – Many people adapt to their CPAP masks by wearing them during the day, when they’re puttering around their houses or just relaxing. If you’re afraid of feeling claustrophobic while wearing your mask at night, strapping it on during the day will help you to realize that there is nothing to be afraid of.

Now that you know more about how to adjust to your new CPAP machine and nasal mask, you’ll be ready to enjoy better sleep, improved health, and the most comfortable transition to CPAP therapy.
