Assess Unexplained Daytime Sleep Needs With Your GP, ACP Suggests
There will be times that we will feel a sense of tiredness during the daytime and find a need to sleep. But if this daytime sleepiness becomes a regular thing and cannot be explained, it may be best to check with the doctor to determine if this is a case of sleep apnea. This would be in line with the new evidence-based clinical practice guideline set by the medical organization American College of Physicians (ACP) as published in its journal Annals of Internal Medicine.
Sleep Apnea, a Serious Medical Condition
This is actually a good recommendation considering that daytime tiredness and sleepiness is a leading symptom of apnea. Especially if you sleep alone, determining whether you have frequent breaks or snore a lot can be very difficult. Even with companions, it may not be as easy to determine if you are at risk of getting apnea.
The earlier sleep apnea is diagnosed the better for the health of a person. Aside from the failure to get the proper night’s rest, sleep apnea has been linked to serious health conditions that include cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, cognitive impairment, and type 2 diabetes. Recent studies have even associated sleep apnea to increased risk of certain respiratory diseases, osteoporosis, and even suicidal tendencies.
Evaluation of Risk Factors and Laboratory Examination
People who experience daytime tiredness probably cannot explain the reasons why to their healthcare providers. This becomes more pressing when aside from this unexplained sleepiness; you may manifest other symptoms such as fatigue, snoring, insomnia, and a very unrefreshing rest.
Your doctor may then conduct a thorough assessment by going through the symptoms, risk factors, and subjecting the patient to a laboratory examination. Risk factors associated with apnea have been identified as excess weight, increasing age, thick neck circumference, genetic disposition, and a history of nasal congestion.
As recommended by the ACP, a person suspected of having sleep apnea should undergo a full-night, attended, in-laboratory polysomnography or the PSG. If this is not available, the ACP suggests using a home-based portable monitor.
And of course, the earlier the condition of sleep apnea is diagnosed, the better for the patient. This will mean cutting down drastically the risk of getting those serious diseases earlier mentioned. Therefore, this may also mean a better quality of life especially now that you may have the proper sleep through the various modalities available such as the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device.
