CPAP won’t give you sleep? Research these options & get results now

The AirCurve 10 by Resmed is a series of Bilevel units of varying features and benefits which perform better than CPAP in many ways.

First, we will cover what the Aircurve Bilevel is and second, what this Bilevel series accomplishes for the user.

What is Bilevel?

Bilevel positive airway pressure (BPAP), commonly referred to by the trademarked names BiPAP and BIPAP, is a form of non-invasive mechanical pressure support ventilation that uses a time-cycled or flow-cycled change between two different applied levels of positive airway pressure.

When is Bilevel needed?

A Bilevel unit is required when a singular amount of pressurized air (i.e. CPAP)  is not tolerated by a patient, Two pressures may be required, which a CPAP unit cannot produce.. This means two pre-programmed airway pressures from a Bilevel unit may benefit the apneic patient more effectively.

How Bilevel Works

Bilevel is a unit providing air pressure delivered via separate volumes, where one volume of pressurized air is given with inhalation and a second volume of pressurized air is given with exhalation. The complete delivery of inhalation and exhalation is called ventilation. This means ventilation can be programmed and provided by a Bilevel unit.

What do the Bilevel Settings represent?

A Bilevel’s settings mimic breathing inward (inhalation) and outward (exhalation).

The inhalation and exhalation pressures have values called centimeters of water or the subscript, cmH20.

A setting for a Bilevel can look like this:

Inhalation – 16cmH20  Exhalation 10cmH20  or  I/E 16/10 on a prescription from a sleep doctor.

This means an air pressure of 16cmH20 is pushed into the airway during inhalation (to keep the airway open) and 10cmH20 is pushed into the airway during exhalation (to keep the airway open).

Ultimately when a Bilevel is programmed 16/10,  it will give these pressures for the user for every breath, thereby controlling sleep apnea.

How a Bilevel delivers pressures

Let’s examine how the user triggers or “starts” Bilevel ventilation using the unit’s algorithmic programming

Here’s what we know in simple terms:

A Bilevel can be “initiated via user breathing effort” to ventilate.

For example, the user gives an effort to breathe in and triggers the full Aircurve ventilation cycle. Therefore the programming puts the user in control of when ventilation occurs. This is how a user’s experience is customized.

There are two ways this happens and they are described below.

The Bilevel’s Program-ability Explained

The Aircurve series is equipped with various ways to be triggered by the user.

  • TiControl: Found in AirCurve 10 S, AirCurve 10 VAuto, and AirCurve 10 ST, TiControl lets providers program minimum and maximum time limits on either side of the patient’s ideal spontaneous flow cycling, creating control for the patient to cycle the breath. For example, Ticontrol can give two (2) seconds of inhalation pressure delivery and four (4) seconds of exhalation pressure delivery.
  • Other inhalation and exhalation time durations can be programmed.
  • Trigger Sensitivity: Adjustable trigger and cycle sensitivity settings TiControl, found in AirCurve 10 S, AirCurve 10 VAuto, and AirCurve 10 ST, can be used to optimize synchrony between the device and the patient’s own respiratory efforts. This means the effort to breath inward (i.e.  like a small gentle gasp ) tells the Aircurve when to start delivering pressures.

Bilevel Advanced Comfort Options Explained

  • Vsync: Advanced leak management technology, Vsync helps provide patient-ventilator synchrony for a natural `feel`to one`s breathing pattern. This means there is customized matching of the breathing cycle. Vsync is available in all AirCurve 10 devices.
  • HumidAir: Integrated heated humidification that affords simpler therapy, with fewer parts to set up and manage.
  • Easy-Breathe – Silent blower operation is in all units.

Now let’s look at each unit in brief and the differences between each Bilevel:

  • AirCurve 10 S: This is a Bilevel device ideal for those who require extra pressure support (more than 20cmH20) or find it impossible to adjust to fixed pressure continuous positive airway pressure devices. It features two different adjustable pressures that can help make therapy feel more comfortable.
  • AirCurve 10 VAuto: This is an auto-adjusting bilevel device for patients who need greater pressure support (to 25cmH20) to treat their obstructive sleep apnea. It uses the comfort of both the proven AutoSet algorithm and Easy-Breathe waveform in its VAuto algorithm (making the unit silent).
  • AirCurve 10 ST: A bilevel device with backup rate (a guaranteed rate of ventilating breaths per minute) that provides exceptional patient-ventilator synchrony, reducing the work of breathing so patients remain comfortable and well ventilated.
  • AirCurve 10 ASV: A bilevel device for central breathing disorders such as Cheyne-Stokes respiration, central sleep apnea, or obstructive events. The AirCurve 10 ASV recognizes the patient’s own minute ventilation (i.e. full inhalation and exhalation pattern per minute) It does this to treat breathing disorders with auto-adjusting (intuitive) pressure support, and upper airway obstruction with auto-adjusting expiratory positive airway pressure, the device works to rapidly stabilize breathing.

In conclusion, remember the process of obtaining a unit described above does require a prescribed order from a sleep physician. A sleep doctor will have access to your sleep study results and assess which Bilevel is right for you. Be sure to secure this part of the process so your sleep apnea treatment is optimal and you can say goodbye to CPAP.

Drive a truck under fatigue’s influence? Your Solution Is Here

There’s no question that driver fatigue poses a serious threat to safety on our nation’s roadways. But just how bad is the threat? Well, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the number of fatigue-related crashes reported to the police each year stands at a staggering 100,000, many of which involve professional drivers in heavy commercial vehicles.

That means an average of 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries and $12.5 billion in monetary damages each year as a result of fatigue-related accidents.

Without treatment, the typical sleepy driver’s future is potentially fatal.

The solution starts here.

Resmed’s New F20 mask, Part Two by CPAPClinic

Resmed’s New F20 mask: A review, Part Two

Continuing on discussing the F20 by Resmed…

THE MASK FRAME AND ELBOW

The F20 mask frame presents a more compact feel and design when compared to the F10, The angles where the headgear attaches and ´pulls´ the mask onto the face have remained consistent. There have been some interesting changes to the F20’s elbow and exhaust design.

The Squeeze Tab allows easy removal of the elbow joint, at the point of the frame. They are easy to locate, and will prove to be more durable than the flimsy rubber bits on the F10. In addition, ResMed has employed harder plastic for the entire elbow assembly, likely making this part a bit more durable as well.

THE HEADGEAR and sizing

The headgear design, in principle, remains similar to the F10. Obviously the mechanism of attaching the headgear has changed  while the basic design is still solid. The fabric is breathable, plush-like and stable.

Before obtaining the F20, you can print and size your face with the template below:

Conclusion

Altogether, the combination of the small improvements add up to a unique design. Resmed has fine-tuned the open face full face design and continues to come a long way with its engineering since the Quattro FX mask line.

Overall, we feel ResMed has done a grand job here. They have incorporated the best features of their previous masks and have created what seems to be a very solid package called the F20.  This mask rates a “10” out of ten in our book.

The New Resmed F20: A Review, Part One

redditby feather
Facebooktwittergoogle_plusby feather

The AirFit F20 Full Face Mask

The AirFit F20 is ResMed’s new full face mask for the CPAP, APAP and BiPAP user. To their credit, ResMed has retained many of the features that made the F10 Full Face mask, their previous installment, very popular, making slight improvements throughout the mask design. We will focus on key changes to the mask and give our rating

1. The F20 cushion.

The cushion is the whole experience for many PAP users. Resmed claims the F20 cushion is superior to the F10. And although the basic design of the silicone cushion of the F20 looks extremely similar to the F10, there have been some changes which are meant to make it more comfortable and retain a more consistent seal.

ResMed has used a combination of a frost-like appearance on the silicone, which had been on the F10 mask cushion. The polished silicone seal of previous masks, like the Quattro FX and Mirage Quattro, did “resemble proper adherence” to the skin, preventing the cushion from riding up the chin and into the mouth.

The frost-like surface on the upper part of the F20 cushion is designed to reduce any irritation across the bridge of the nose. These tiny changes should be a decent improvement.

Additionally, a major issue with the F10 occurred when the silicone part of the cushion was detaching randomly from the hard plastic. This would require purchasing a new cushion; but this proved to be very costly for many, even if insurance helped. ResMed has assured the cushion connection point remains solid with the F20. This should mark the longevity of this mask part and reduce the frequency of replacing the cushion.

2. Magnets

Resmed had finally done it, they experimented with the magnet idea in their N10 model, and were happy with its success. Therefore, the bottom straps of the headgear attach to the mask frame with carefully designed, magnetized clips.

This means no more breakable plastic hooks.

The F10 had silicone hooks that the headgear looped over when attaching to the frame. As well as being prone to breaking, some patients with limited dexterity and strength found them difficult to use. This is despite the hooks being considerably easier to use than the clips on the older Quattro models. The F20 solves the clip issue with magnets.

In addition; and this is may be the part you’ll like; the magnetic clips are terrifically easy to use. They are the best option for anyone who has dexterity or strength problems with their fingers. The great thing is, if you get the clips very close to the magnets, they will simply “pop” into place. Providing the magnetic clips stay attached throughout the night, this full face mask option will prove to be “the answer” for many.

Why you should not listen to this Sleep Apnea Expert completely

Why you shouldn’t listen to this Sleep Apnea Expert ~ completely

There are many experts in the Sleep Apnea world, including the one featured in the above video. For the first minute, he is explaining accurate Sleep Apnea realities.

However, he gets into an explanation of how the tongue is the only reason for Sleep Apnea, which is defined here:

Let`s understand the tongue is only one part of a host of reasons for the presence of Sleep Apnea.  However, he goes on to say a dental appliance is 100% necessary to “cure” Sleep Apnea by lifting the tongue. This is not only interesting, it makes our faces cringe a little because he is offering only one answer among many possibilities.

Let’s understand his postulation a little more and offer a wider understanding. He may have grounds to proclaim a cure for a falling tongue (thus causing Sleep Apnea) from his own studies of one or more groups under his care. However, it should be said the tongue is not the singular reason for Sleep Apnea for everyone else not under his care.

Nor is his much touted mouth-piece the only solution to Sleep Apnea.

There is a suggested sequence for the Sleep Apnea sufferer to follow.

Here are the recommended steps to take if you suspect you have Sleep Apnea:

  1. Visit your general practitioner for an initial assessment. Obtain a referral to a sleep clinic .
  2. At the Sleep Clinic, you will be tested and possibly diagnosed, telling you what you are dealing with.
  3. Once someone knows what they have, such as Sleep Apnea, they have the option (via a Sleep Doctor recommendation) to see an ENT specialist to find out why they  have Sleep Apnea.  An inner examination of the oral, nasal and throat cavities by an Eye, Ears, Throat, Nose (ENT) Doctor is the best evaluation to determine the cause for Sleep Apnea and create a list of the best treatment options.
  4. The lesson here is, each person with Sleep Apnea may have one or more causes and treatment options.

Learn more about various Sleep Apnea treatments within the general chart below.

If someone has completed the above steps, they should always defer to

  • their Sleep Doctor,
  • the results of their sleep study
  • and the results of an ENT test (if done)

…when developing their Sleep Apnea treatment plan.

Lastly, there isn’t a cure for Sleep Apnea yet, but there is help to guide you or someone you know through the process of treating it properly.

We are here to help you along the way.

Should These Sleep Apnea Prevention Tips Be Banned?

redditby feather
Facebooktwittergoogle_plusby feather

Should These Sleep Apnea Prevention Tips Be Banned?

Sleep Apnea is affecting millions around the globe. Many are untreated and require guidance. Consider the alarming statistics below regarding this world-wide trend.

osa-pie-chart

If you have been diagnosed with OSA and are not treating it, take a quick look at some prevention tips below. Keep in mind that OSA can be controlled in some individuals, but not all.****

1. Supine Sleeping Invites Apnea.

Sleeping on your back (supine) sets the stage for your chances of developing sleep apnea. The culprit? Let’s blame gravity. When you lay on your back, the soft tissues on your throat answer to the pull of the earth’s gravitation and block your airway, causing it to narrow, vibrate with breathing or seal off.

sleep-apnea-diagram

Try sleeping on your side, like this.

51YUEa6bETL._SL500_SL160_

In this sleeping position, the tongue cannot fall back and block the throat. Possibly add the following options and make this remedy work.

2. Use Nasal Strips.

Breathe Right strips and other strips are available in most out-patient storefronts or online stores. These strips are excellent for preventing snoring, especially when combined with side-sleeping, if possible.

chin-up-strip-tan-horseshoe-01-xl

Once you are able to minimize snoring, you are also able to reduce your chances of using a sleep apnea mask/PAP* system.

3. Stay away from cigarettes and liquor.

For those of you who enjoy leisurely smoking and/or drinking, your chances of developing sleep apnea increases every time these choices are made. Smoking slowly damages your lung’s ability to introduce oxygen into the blood and rid your body of dangerous levels of carbon dioxide.**Should sleep apnea occur, your ability to do both of these functions is reduced considerably and can develop to dangerous levels.

When drinking, alcohol actually suppresses breathing muscles to lower than normal states of relaxation, training soft tissues to become lazy and eventually block off your airway during sleep.***

4. Conclusion

Three quick and relatively easy solutions are now yours to use. The best approach is to “test” each tip over a short period of time so you can assess overall effectiveness before moving to the next tip. With this practice, you can rule out what isn’t working and maintain what works.****

Someone notable once said ” an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.” Makes sense to us. Why not you?

Get great sleep tonight.

It’s on! The Fitbit vs Airsense 10 CPAP sleep quality comparison review

fitbit-versus-airsense-10

Today we’re breaking down two very popular products that deliver sleep feedback to the user: The Fitbit and the Resmed Airsense 10 CPAP.

This comparison is to take a quick general look into the feedback, the type of information provided and an understanding what each device will and will not deliver for the user ~ especially when related to measuring quality of sleep and proper sleep apnea treatment.

The Fitbit:

The Fitbit is a wrist band which records motion and related statistics when you’re awake and active, therefore giving you good fitness information for your goals. It also records information about your sleep quality (in normal and sensitive modes) and rates your sleep according to the amount of physical movement during sleep.

phone-myair-results

How does the Fitbit measure sleep?

As per the manufacturer, If there is an absence of movement while sleeping, it is indicative of deep sleep and therefore your sleep score goes up. For example, the Fitbit issues a rating in the form of a number, such as 85, meaning the quality of sleep was good.

If you move during sleep, your sleep score plummets. For example, the Fitbit issues a rating of 49. This means sleep quality was bad.

But what if how you “feel” contradicts either result? For example, on a score of 49 you feel your sleep was great.

Or on a score of 85, you felt like you didn’t sleep at all. These examples deserve an explanation.

Some users offered their comments to explain.

“The FitBit isn’t accurate at all. It just tracks motion so if you fidget while you sleep, which happens a lot, you will get poor results.”

And what about expecting the Fitbit to assess, treat or measure sleep disorders?

“Consumers expecting these devices to distinguish sleep stages or give sleep quality feedback (like precise heart-rate, sleep apnea events, etc.) will not get good information. because the Fitbit relies on physical movements and not by brain activity. The two recordings are completely different.”

So the Fitbit’s sleep feedback quality is limited to reading physical movement while sleeping? Yes, and it goes no further. Remember, the Fitbit score is reflective of movement or lack of movement during sleep which might support or hint of a sleep disorder, not treat.

The Fitbit’s best use is for activity measurement and non-medical personal use reporting.

The Science of the Sleep Evaluation and the Fitbit

Sleep clinics utilize electroencephalography (EEG) and other measurements to measure and study brain waves during sleep. The quality of sleep is discerned by key information recorded within various stages of non-REM sleep reporting. As far as quality sleep goes, someone might require sleep quality assessments (i.e. sleep study in a sleep clinic, etc.) to obtain good sleep information.

The bottom-line is this, the Fitbit’s recordings sent to your phone cannot reflect EEG or sleep study-like results. Nor is it a treatment device for sleep apnea. This conclusion leads one to ask what the alternative for actual sleep feedback would be.

Let’s talk about CPAP for a moment.

The Resmed Airsense 10 CPAP Elite

Let’s discuss the Airsense 10 Elite CPAP and how it works as a sleep quality re-enforcement device and feedback tool.

airsense10_autoset_front_1

The Airsense 10 Elite CPAP

The Airsense 10  3G CPAP (Continuous Postive Airway Pressure) device delivers airflow to open up the airway during sleep, therefore preventing stoppages in breathing. It is primarily used by individuals with sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea. It also records sleep quality derived from specific algorithms which send information from the unit’s memory to theto a website via PC, tablet or phone, where the user can see, study and print the information.

The Science of Feedback for the Airsense 10

The information from a Resmed Airsense 10 reflects quality of sleep because of statistical and graphical indicators, such as average per hour breathing stoppages (i.e. apneic events), etc., hours of actual use, wavelength breathing and leak patterns from the CPAP circuit and mask.

The information from an Airsense 10 is also indicative of the actual control of sleep apnea. And as a tool, it works quite well. This means the Airsense 10 Elite is more of a treatment device for sleep apnea; it can also be said sleep feedback is more accurate when a CPAP is performing without mask leaks, power interruptions and usage interruptions.

Combining the Fitbit and CPAP world together

Now that there is an understanding about each device, can both be realistically combined during sleep to prove or disprove quality sleep? The comparison chart below offers an overview explanation.

Is it smart to combine the two technologies for an accurate reflection of high quality sleep and proper sleep apnea treatment?
The verdict is that consistent information must come from the two devices to support a collaborative success. If the Fitbit reflects good sleep, so should the CPAP monitoring program. If results are mixed, it may have nothing to do with each device and more to do with conditions for sleep, such as a comfortable CPAP mask, comfortable bed, adequate CPAP pressure flow and a whole host of variables. The bottom-line is both units have their merits in measuring sleep and each device achieves this aim differently. If you use both units together and interpret the data with a dash of perspective and assistance from your sleep doctor and/or sleep consultant, you’ll have a better time understanding the direction of your sleep quality.

Obtaining a used PAP device instead of buying? Here’s a 10 point checklist for your safety.

season-of-shopping-bucks-county

Is there such thing as a shopping season for PAP devices?

For some suppliers, PAP sales go up and down according to the time of year or by the frequency of overnight studies from local sleep clinics. In general, PAP shopping trends are too broad to apply to all markets and regions. This is largely becaause there are people who shop for PAP devices throughout the year and don’t rely on trends when obtaining old or used PAP devices. If this is you, we understand. We especially “get it” that not all machines are equal and “used PAP” devices can be just as good as new ones. For you anytime shoppers, we’ve compiled a checklist of 10 things to consider before obtaining or owning a used PAP device. Here they are:

FIRST

When going after a PAP device online or offline, it is important for you to actually see what you’re getting.

Consider the overall condition of the unit with pictures, video or seeing it person for your personal assessment. Make sure the device can be cleaned or it can become a health hazard.

Here’s a recommendation from a recent user

Here’s what I do when I get a used machine. I wipe down outside with an alcohol wipe or spray some sort of disinfectant on a cloth or paper towel. I will also wipe down the inside of the humidifier and the little outlet where the hose attaches.

The water chamber if I choose to keep it gets a really got hot soapy water soak and cleaning. REALLY hot water. I will do the same for the hose (if it comes with one) and I am going to keep it but most of the time I just use one of mine that I have been using and save the other for an emergency situation or travel maybe.I changed the filters in the machine to brand new.

Take pictures of the unit and ask friends, family, etc. for their input. It seems everyone knows someone who uses a PAP device these days. Therefoee, a second or third opinion is enormously valuable.

SECOND

So you’ve found a used unit, now it’s time to asses its value before buying.

Dig up some information about the spare parts you’ll need over time. Accessories like tubing, filters, filter covers (if any), water chambers, operating knobs (they do break),  etc. will need replacing.

clean-supplies-pic-300x218

As with anything that gets used daily, something will need changing or replenishment.

THIRD

Not every unit is as cleaned up as it appears to be.

Of course a clean exterior is important. These products help.

cleaning

Internal sanitizing of a PAP unit is not done with soap and water ~ ever.

However, there are internal workings that capture bacteria, mold, etc. Consider taking the unit to a PAP vendor for an “inside the unit clean” before you buy it. If this is impractical, consider the Soclean.

FOURTH

Remember that a PAP unit must be used with tubing and a PAP mask to be useful. Consider asking the seller of the PAP device you want: Is the PAP compatible with any tubing or does it have an electrical tubing connection only?

Some older PAP devices were equipped with an electrical heated tubing only, making it difficult for universal tubing to connect. Inspect the used PAP carefully and do some research on the device you are considering.

FIFTH

The previous user of the PAP device you want may have taken the unit everywhere. And the unit might show its run hours to let you see the proof.

The run hours on a PAP device are similar to an odometer on a vehicle. The longer it was previously used, the faster the internal mechanism will eventually run down or break down. Ask to see any programming on the machine (by an LCD screen) that might tell of its run hours. This will tell you if the unit is newer or a relic.

Also, a used unit may or may not be out of warranty. Here are some manufacturer phone numbers to call. Ask them about the warranty of the unit by offering its serial number.

Respironics – 1.800.345.6443

Fisher Paykel – 1.949.453.4000

Kego – 1.866.862.7328

SIXTH

What’s that smell?

Getting the smell out of a used machine is either quick or it’s a long process. Here are some first hand accounts regarding getting rid of nasty smells from a used PAP unit.

Consider what one PAP user had to say:

*SMELL IT* with it *OFF* stick your nose on both the intake and air outlet, and give a good sniff… I once bought a used machine and didn’t notice the stale cigarette smoke smell because I made the mistake of smelling it while running, the rush of fresh air being pulled through will drown out any stink… and stink this one did, when I took it apart, the silicone parts inside were *yellow* instead of clear. (I’d have bought it anyway, because it was desperately needed, but I could probably have gotten some $$ off to compensate for all the time I spent cleaning it and getting the stink out of the silicone).

Another reported this “fix” –

Vamoose Cigarette Odor Eliminator is very effective at eliminating cigarette odor and all other tobacco odors. It has the ability to penetrate, seek out and react with the components of tobacco smoke (tar and nicotine) dissolving and converting them into gaseous molecules without causing any damage to fabrics, materials or hard surfaces.

Vamoose Cigarette Odor Eliminator can remove cigarette odor and all other tobacco odors in homes, apartments, condominiums, cars, trucks and RV’s. Vamoose Cigarette Odor Eliminator also works on furniture, leather, wood, paneling, tile, cloth, drapes, carpets and most other surfaces that harbor the tar and nicotine that results from cigarette and tobacco smoke. Vamoose Cigarette Odor Eliminator gets rid of the cigarette odor and eliminates the tar and nicotine too!

Let the CPAP run inside a tight box that has vamoose in it.

Another option is:

Ozium on a cloth or cotton ball nearby (the filer inlet), but not touching.
(the smells from inside) dissipate in a few hours. Inexpensive.

Another detailed this:

I did have an S9 that I purchased cheap on CL. I mistakenly did not try it when I bought it…just plugged it in to be sure that bit worked. When I discovered the smoke smell, I ran it next to an open window 3 days in a row for about 6 hours. That took out about 75% of the smell. Then I sprayed Frebreze about 12″ from the air intake while it was running without a filter. I did this twice and all the smell was gone. I guess it may depend on the amount of time the machine was subjected to the smoke.

Yet another added:

Now if the machine has some unpleasant odors…that’s a different story but usually what I try first is simply let the machine run outside on the porch with a new filter for several hours (it’s dusty where I live unless it has rained recently) and I toss that filter when I am done. I have yet to get a machine that running it outside didn’t remove any odors in it and it wasn’t necessarily smoke odors. You know how some people you go to their house and it sort of has a general odor that you really don’t care for??? Maybe incense or candles or pets or whatever…those type of odors.

We recommend in addition to any forementioned technique is the use of aromatherapy.

SEVENTH

What if the power goes our or I go out camping? What are your options?

Compatibility with a secondary power source like external lithium batteries might be a critical turning point with your buying consideration.

airsense_connection (1)

Use this link for a quick look at PAP unit and battery compatiibility.

EIGHTH

So, if one seller has a unit that is not to your liking, what then?

Who else should you buy from?

Many turn to family, friends and the classifieds (online and offline).

If considering a Vendor, insist on being more strict with what you’re being sold. Many vendors can have cleaning, sanitization services, PAP calibration checks, memory downloads from the unit to clear out before you use it and a possible accessory upgrade with any warranty information.

NINTH

Now that you’ve found a unit and uses the above steps to assure a possible sale. Take the unit through these last few paces of qualifying a good purchase.

-A Last-Minute Checklist –

What kind of machine do I have and who is the manufacturer?

Is the pressure accurate when the PAP is turned on? How do I calibrate it?

Does the ramp feature work?

Will the heating unit for the water chamber heat up?

Can I get new humidifier chamber?

Is the filter changeable or replaceable?

Will it run on 110 to 240 volts?

Does it have sea level adjustment?

Does it have pressure relief adjustment?

Can the humidifier be programmed for Celsius or Farenheit or by numbers (indicating high heat when going from one to five, for example)?

Is there a manual? (if not check out this site)

Can I replace the power cord and transformer if needed?

— Be sure to print this post for easy reference or just the checklist.–

Tenth

Need we say more? Since every buying choice is inherently a personal choice, assure yourself the best research when considering used PAP equipment.

With the right amount of thorough research, your PAP purchase will serve you well for years to come.

Lastly, if buying a used PAP device isn’t what you’re considering, look at the recent models here for a quick overview.

What does Major League Baseball’s World Series have to do with Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

What does Major League Baseball’s World Series have to do with Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

cpap and the world series

The awareness of sleep apnea and sleep apnea treatment (such as CPAP) continues to skyrocket throughout North America. Aside from the news and social media awareness. one case of Sleep Apnea case has emerged over the years from Major League Baseball. A particular player who is a star of the Cleveland Indians (a contender in the 2016 MLB World Series)  is currently battling sleep issues related to Sleep Apnea. His name is Mike Napoli. Let’s learn about his struggle, treatment plan and see what he did to combat Sleep Apnea and win back his life, great sleep and bring new energy into his athletic career in professional baseball..

During an interview from 2015, Mike expressed his battle with sleep apnea since his early 20’s. He further explains that the treatment plan he underwent was multi-faceted. He detailed how he tried a dental piece, a treatment which displaces his jaw to life the jaw and tongue upward during sleep.

cpap
Without the mouth piece, the jaw would fall back and close off his airway.

When this option could only take his results so far, he turned to PAP devices. Mike involved himself with a CPAP machine, the preferred source of sleep anea treatment.

“I’ve been dealing with sleep apnea for a long time, my whole career,” Napoli told WEEI.com.

Napoli admits working with CPAP machines and respective masks, although he didn’t detail what exactly he tried. It can safely be said CPAP played a role in helping Mike determine the best treatment plan.

cpap-therapy-procedures
He went on to explain sleep “medicines” were also important in his approach to proper treatment.

Ultimately, after repeated professional assessments, it was determined Mike required jaw surgery, a drastic measure which affects a small portion of those afflicted with sleep apnea. The type of intensive surgery meant his jaw had to be deconstructed and reconstructed to ease the intensity of Sleep Apnea.

Please note that not all people resort to this extreme form of treatment, but for Napoli, surgery proved to be the answer. He added in the same interview referenced earlier that, “I’ve tried numerous things and none of them worked. Dental mouth piece, CPAP machine, medicines. … It’s just gotten to the point where I have to get this done.”

The procedure Napoli ultimately required is called bimaxillary advancement surgery. This procedure separated the front portions of the lower and upper jaw to move them forward and allow more room behind the tongue. The objective of this doctor  directed procedure reduces the likelihood of the airway being obstructed during sleep.

After recovering from this surgery, Mike explains, “I used to wake up 50 or a hundred times a night. Now I’m actually sleeping. I’m not tired all the time.”

The inevitable question from many of you may be,” Will I require drastic measures like Mike just to get some sleep?” Please keep in mind that Mike Napoli’s treatment approach was specific to him. Why treat sleep apnea? Your brain and heart recommend it!

Consider the toll these organs take when sleep apnea goes untreated.

An estimated 1.8 million (North) Americans with sleep apnea are Four Times as likely to suffer a stroke (which affects the brain). The same estimated number of people are Three Times more likely to experience some kind of Heart Disease from the same untreated sleep apnea.
